Love for Ladders

I was telling someone early how I found it funny that you can come across a blog with some brilliant idea and suddenly you NEED this thing you never knew you needed before.  Yep I do it do, you don't have to be ashamed.  This is how I ended up with this new piece of functional art in my living room yesterday.  I saw a blog post of someone who used one as a book shelf and another in a bathroom etc... I just knew I too, HAD TO HAVE ONE!

Since my trunk that housed the throw blankets is now in the formal living area I decided that was much too far for my chunk butt to travel each time I needed a cozy little blanky.  So my new ladder is taking it's place.

I failed to take too many pictures of the "process" since there wasn't much to it.  But taking the ladder apart was more difficult than I originally anticipated.  All the brackets and metal hinges were riveted on!
(Of course they were because I just can't seem to get into a project and it turn out as simple as I imagined it too.)

It was a bit of a pain to drill them all out. I'd say there were about 12 total. Not too bad though and totally worth it.

Next I sanded it lightly.  I wanted a old distressed look but I had to sand it because I didn't want any splinters while I was wiping my stain on.  Here it was before the stain.

And after...

I didn't work the stain into the grooves of the steps.  I thought it gave it a neat effect this way.

Sorry about my soap opera on the box... it helps me feel like there is another adult in the house lol.

There you have it.  My new blanket rack/book shelf/decorative wall piece.

Sommer. I love this. I have an old ladder in my yard that I plan to do something similar with. I have used it in my garden for a plant stand but I want to change because it is all chippy and cute. Thanks for the inspiration. Love what you did. Thanks for the invite to your linky party. I linked up the lamp :) Yay. Did you post this on mine as well? If not you should come link up :) thx Deb @ Dejarenew

Hello Sommer,
You did an amazing job on that ladder! It is true how other blogs give us so many ideas for projects.

A question, why did you take it apart? Did you need to for sanding it or did you change out the ladder rungs to larger ones to use as a shelf? Would love to know so I can try it myself!

Oooh, this is gooorgeous! I'd love to have a ladder like this, leaning casually against the wall.

I love the ridging on yours. It's beautiful.

Very nice and a great idea! I actually found a bunk bed ladder a few weeks ago at the Habitat, I was going to use it in the bathroom for towels but I like your idea better!

Your persistence paid off, Sommer. Your ladder-turned-blanket rack/book shelf/decorative wall piece looks great.

Thanks for linking to the party. Still hoping you're gonna link that humor of yours to Funny Faux Pas Follies, though! ;)
