Powder Bath Revealed

First off... Don't forget, the VIP party is going on until Sunday night!

Wow what a journey this bathroom has been!  I'm so happy it's finished but in the same breath it was a totally fun project with lots of new things learned.  And aside from sand on the floors and the fact that it's a bathroom I love it so much I could live in there!

Here is a reminder of what I had to work with originally...
Yep, old ugly wall paper border, plain old walls, builders mirror... Pretty much a blank boring slate.

And here it is three weeks and a broken toe later!

I just got this beautiful hourglass with the perfect robins egg blue sand today at TJ Maxx!

The towel rack is from Hobby Lobby.  Man I love that store. And part of the framed mirror.

These little birds my 6 yr old daughter found for me at the dollar store.  Does she know my taste or what?

I love this shoe form and had it on the books until the birds gave it the boot.  Quite literally.

I already had these hurricane glasses.  Once I started getting the feel for this room and where it was going I pondered over and over on how to fill these.  This is where good friends come in handy!  My bff suggested the shells and we found the blue glass pieces at the same time.
I actually wasn't sure I liked this tiled ledge behind the sink and toilet when I moved in but now that the mirror is framed and I can see all my decor staring back at itself, it's way awesome!

Here is another little birdie I put in a cloche.  Aww he's so cute there.

Another great garage sale find was the cloche pedestal and this cute vintage soap sign.  I love how the rusted edges play off the blue wall.  Have I mention I'm totally stoked that it's garage sale season again?!!

These frames have had many homes around this place but nothing felt quite right until now.  Perfect fit!

I had other plan for some cute antique bathroom prints for this wall until I found this to replace my towell bar!  How cool is it?  I also plan to put a cute window covering on that window and toss the icky aluminum blinds.

Here is a close up of my handy work =)  I put in all the panelling which I might add is a huge pain in the butt to work with.  It will be a while before I attempt it again . Mr Garden helped me level my trim for the top and I did all the painting and cuts for all the pieces.

What have I learned from this project?

Do not work in the garage with flip flops or you may break a toe.

Always put the guard on your miter saw or you may bleed.

Make sure you have the right glue when fastening trim to a mirror or you may be up against something like this.  Yes those are shower curtain rods.  Don't ask me how I have so many extras floating around lol.  But they make a great tension rod when Mr Garden doesn't want to help you hold the frame together all night long waiting for the glue to set!
Hey, I'm a crafter, It's in my genes to get creative and even Mr Garden noted that it quite ingenious!

And lastly of every one of the above things... I've learned this was totally worth every drop of blood, sweat and tears and I just love my new bathroom!

Powder Bath Pt II

This has been one of those projects where when I thought it out in my head it would have been done and over in a week flat.  Now here I am three weeks later with a laundry list of things still needing to be finished lol.  Isn't that always the way it goes?

Well here is an update on the progress in the powder bath.  I've gotten all the panelling up.  Filled all the holes and caulked the seams.  Painted the base coat for my harlequin pattern and cut the pieces for the mirror frame.  And broke my toe.

Mrs Type A herself helpin out with gluing the panels.

This was when we ran out of glue and tried what we had on hand, E-6000 glue.  FAIL!

Holes are filled from the nail gun.

Broken toe.  Don't look too close, I'm in desperate need of a pedi!  And it's totally obvious I've been working in the garage in flip flops, hence the broken toe lol.  Note to self, wear tennies in the garage!

And here is how the bathroom looks today.  There is the moulding for the mirror laying on the tile.  I have clips on my mirror so I have to take it off and glue it to the wall before I can continue on the framing.

So I still have to frame the mirror, paint the ceiling, paint the harlequin pattern, paint the paneling, put the baseboards back on and the chair rail.  Then decorate.  LOL please pray for me.

Guest Bath Pt 1

"Keep Calm and Cary On" "Now Panic and Freak Out".  That's more like it.  I'm the girl who is always getting in over my head.  I bite off more than I can chew.  Projects always look easier than they really are.

So painlessly got all the wall paper boarder down in my guest bath.  Then I took the first piece of base board off with ease.  Then it got harder.  A lot harder.  Someday I plan to write an ebook and I fear for my readers.  Anyone who can understand my measurements and sketches will have to have an IQ over like 500.  Or some sort of decoder.

Here is the progress on the bathroom.  Now... the end of day two, I've decided to re-think my design.  Cause that's how I roll.

The Before Pics... And my paint sample.  See the boarder along the ceiling?

I contemplated several ways to remove the paper.  Ultimately I decided to use a scoring tool and hot water.  It worked great!

The first layer came off almost in one piece.  Then I had to get the second layer with the glue next.  But there was very little scraping involved.  I was pretty happy.

Next came removal of the base boards.  I didn't have a pry bar handy so I used my chisel.  Just be careful not to chip the wood.

Here is the floor boards removed.  I didn't bother with most the paper along the bottom of the room since it will be covered.  I just tore off anything that was already peeling or bubbled.

Here is the mess I had at this point.  Who knew such a little room could be so much work?
I had to show you the worlds longest screw in my toilet paper roll holder.  We wouldn't want the poo paper coming off the wall now would we?  "Help! It's fallen and I can't get up!"
Here is most of the paneling now up for a dry fit.  And this is where I change my mind.  After cutting all day I decide I don't want the boards 46in.  I'm cutting them down tomorrow!  Crazy I know.

Stay tuned for part 2!

Powder Bath Revealed

Wow what a journey!  I'm so relieved this project is behind me yet so stinkin thrilled I accomplished this.  This was my first renovation and I couldn't be more pleased with the final outcome.  In fact if it had sand on the floors and wasn't a bathroom I'd want to spend all day everyday in this room lol.

I started this project with a few inspirations from other photo's and blogs I had saved photo's from but no real directions as far as a theme or feel I wanted it to have when I was finished.  I think it has a beachy yet old fashioned feel to it.  There are still many many things I want to do to this room but the over all process is now complete.  And when I get to those other additions I will share them as separate posts.

Here is the before bathroom.  Ugly outdated wall paper boarder, white splotchy walls, nothing.

And here it is three weeks and a broken toe later =)

I got this little clock for a song at a garage sale last summer.  I painted and glazed it.

The framed mirror and towel rack.

My 6 yr old daughter found these darling birds at the dollar store for me!  Does she know my taste or what?

Since it started feeling kind of beachy and I had these hurricanes I grabbed a candle, some sea shells and broken colored glass to fill them.

I'm still not sure this will live here forever but once I found those birds to sit on the books it got the boot.  Literally lol.

Another cute little birdie in a cloche.

My $1 garage sale sign. Vintage soap.  Love it.

These frames have moved all over the place from the hutch to shelves to here.  Finally they fit, perfectly.

I have other plans for this wall opposite the mirror but for now it will hold this sign.

Here is a close up of my work.  I can officially say that beadboard is the biggest pain in the arse I've ever laid hands on.  But I am thrilled with the end result.

What did I learn during this project?

Do not wear flip flops while working in the garage or you may break a toe.

Make sure the guard on your miter saw is down or you may bleed.

How to make dato cuts on the router table.  This was so the trim we used would fit flush on the top of the beadboard and against the wall.

Using the right glue to mount anything to a mirror is imperative!

Yes those are shower curtain rods we had wedge against the mirror corners over night while the glue set.  Because I bought the wrong glue and Mr Garden wasn't really in the mood to stand there all night holding the molding up to the mirror with me =)

But every single bit was totally worth it for this...
